Laboratory Safety Rules
1. Only students registered in biology are permitted in the laboratory.
2. Eating, drinking, and smoking are prohibited in the laboratory.
3. Open-toed shoes and sandals may not be worn in the laboratory.
4. Laboratory procedures must be followed carefully. Unauthorized
experiments are strictly prohibited.
5. Work areas must be kept clean. Backpacks, coats, and other
personal items must be placed in designated areas in the lab.
6. Goggles must be worn when working with chemicals.
7. Chemical use is restricted to the black bench tops. Flammable
chemicals must be used under the fume hoods and kept away from hot
plates.
8. ALL ACCIDENTS must be reported to the learning assistant
immediately. This includes chemical spills, student injuries, and
broken material or equipment.
9. Broken glassware must be swept up with a broom and dustpan.
NEVER pick up broken glass with your hands. Dispose of broken
glass in the Broken Glass Container.
10. Solid wastes must be disposed of in the trash and liquid
wastes must be flushed down the
drain with water, unless otherwise instructed.
11. Upon completion of a laboratory exercise, wash, dry, and
return all materials to their proper
places in the lab. Wash all countertops
and tables.
12. Students must be aware of the Hazardous Material Identification
Codes on chemicals
used
in lab. Placards are posted in the
laboratory for reference.
13. It is your RIGHT TO KNOW about chemicals you are handling in
the biology laboratory.
