This guide to business internet information was created by the Newark Public Library's Business, U.S. Documents, and Patents Reference department. The guide is a comprehensive and expertly chosen list of Business sites that aid researchers in the areas of general business, company information, finance and investing, foreign exchange and much more. It is particularly helpful for those researching New Jersey business, labor and economics.
This guide is not limited to internet information, but instead provides assistance in doing research on a wide variety of business topics. Information on print and electronic business sources, as well as the research process, is provided.

All publicly traded companies must file a report with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission regarding basic company information. Click on "search the EDGAR database" to access this information, such as company histories, business strategies, products, R & D, brand information, competition and information on the industry segment.
Gives list of links with research on a given company. You can either enter your company's name or ticker symbol.
This metasite allows you to search for information on private and public companies. It covers international companies as well. Search on a company name and it gives you links to company profiles.
This site gives information on companies who are going public or who have recently done so. This list goes back to 1994 but only the present year's Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) are free.

on the Federal Reserves offers information on the history, stucture and
policies of the Federal Reserve Bank. Although the site is best viewed
with Flash, there is an html version of the site. Click on the "HTML
Version" link or install Flash to view.
Compiles foundational works and ideas from comentators on economics. This site approaches the subject from the perspective that personal freedom is necessary for human progress. Despite this acknowledged bias, the site does a good job presenting that tradition of economic thought.

The following Web sites offer similar services: you can enter a ticker symbol
or company name, and receive stock quotes. Many of these sites are also good
for doing company research, because they give more than just financial information
by linking you to other great resources. Most search engines also provide
financial information, particularly stock quotes, so below are listed a few
of the major search engines. Finally, see the Economics section above as well.
Big Chart is particularly useful when you are looking for stock quotes, because it allows you to get a stock quote for any common stock back to the early nineties. From the home page, click on the green tab that says "historical quotes." Next type in your ticker symbol and the date you want to look up. Big Chart historical quotes will give you the opening and closing prices, the day's high and low, and trading volume.
Morningstar
Morningstar is a Chicago-based
company that gives users mutual fund, stock and investment information.
Most of the information in this database is for members only, but you
can get some basic information as well as recent news stories on mutual
funds and stocks.
This site offers a comprehensive list of management resources on the Web. It also presents links to management articles.
IOMA's (Institute of Management and Information) Business Management Supersite
A very comprehensive Website (almost 1000 pages) focusing solely on Business Management. Provides links to their "e-zine" which reports on business management news and information. Presents management resources, career information, news, discussion topics, and more.

Check out this site for information on market segmentation. It also contains an on-line version of their well respected publication American Demographics. Of ancillary interest is an instantaneous population counter.
Demographic reports are free with signup.
The Census Bureau contains the largest database of information concerning demographics of the United States.
As this Web site put out by the Census Bureau explains, "The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) has replaced the U.S. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. NAICS was developed jointly by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to provide new comparability in statisitics about business activity across North America."

user to search the 1987 SIC manual by keyword or by 4-digit SIC in order
to access descriptive information for an SIC.
This is the major resource document for product and manufacturer research. Students will have to sign up first.
Both marketing and advertising students can get the latest news on promotion from ADAge.
Lifestyle segmentation is superbly covered by Stanford Research Institute, the industry leaders in the area. This site enables students to answer a short lifestyle questionnaire and discover their psychographic segment. Students using it have found it to be remarkably accurate. They can also take an iVALS test to discover their Internet user segment.
