Abstract: There is some argument today about whether or not the Internet qualifies as a library. With the goal of defining and projecting the library of the next generation, this presentation will address this issue as well as the evolution of archiving techniques, the future of intellectual property, and the emerging for-profit library revolution.

Innovative Use of Information Technology by Colleges. Council on Library and Information Resources, August 1999 | HTML version | PDF version
Introduction: "The Council on Library and Information Resources' (CLIR's) College Libraries Committee began its project of studying innovative uses of technology on college campuses in the spring of 1998. The president of CLIR and the chair of the College Libraries Committee wrote letters to heads of libraries of colleges and mid-sized universities in the United States to ask if they had used technology in a way that significantly enhanced teaching and learning on their campuses. The letter encouraged applications from librarians who were proud of their accomplishments and willing to host a study team for a site visit."

"Summary: The Eastern Connecticut State University library planned, with the new facility, a new configuration for user computers to be one-stop shopping "Scholar's Workstations." The impact on reference services was dramatic, resulting in modifications in staffing, policies/procedures, printing practices, user orientation and education, etc. Moreover, the reference librarians were troubled by their perceptions of how these workstations were utilized, challenging us to conduct a user survey to determine the validity of these perceptions. In this article, we will describe (1) how we conceived this new configuration and its impact, (2) modifications made, and (3) an analysis of the user survey." An interesting finding consistent with generational theory is that college students multitask when using library computers. .

Abstract: The higher education environment is undergoing significant change as we enter a global knowledge-based economy. Technology now enables students to undertake studies which are time and place independent. To thrive in a networked learner environment we must create new strategic relationships between library and information professionals, information and education technologists, trainers and staff developers, instructional designers and media designers and producers. The University of Newcastle sought strategic advantage through integrating its information, education and technology services in early 1997. This paper explores the rationale for the formation of the division and the strengths and weaknesses of this approach as highlighted through our recent external review.
