The following key is from the award winning book "Estuaries: A Day at the Bay" - our curriculum for middle and junior high school students. This dichotomous key will identify many of the most common fishes that are native to the coastal waters of New Jersey. To use the key, study the picture of one of the fish specimens (Or print out the page) and compare it with the descriptions in the key. Choose the description that best describes your fish until you have identified your catch. You can check your answers at the end. A glossary of fishy anatomy can be found below to help you with some of the terms you may not be familiar with. Good luck! |
