Duties include:
Preparing equipment and materials 15-minutes before groups
arrive (Collecting nets, etc.).
Preparing and offering short presentations on the shore
and marine life, beach walks, marsh studies
and history tours during the school's 4-hour visit.
Learning all aspects of the position before being eligible
for paid employment, including: Sandy Hook topics, class management;
activities such as seining, beach profiling, lighthouse tours
and safety, radio use, road crossing procedures and traffic safety
for groups, safety and behavior management near the water.
Being familiar with park regulations and making certain
the classes stay within those guidelines.
Directing students and teachers throughout their visit
to insure they have a safe and informative tour.
Guiding students and teachers safely across park roads
using visual warning signs and flags.
Remaining with the class at all times (including lunch)
to be available to answer questions and give guidance.
Assisting with the collection of marinelife, including
wearing hip-waders and/or going into knee-deep water on the bayside,
as needed. Boots are provided to staff when needed.
Informing the teacher and bus driver (Upon arrival) of
program needs for the day.
Guiding the bus driver throughout the day and insuring
the bus is properly parked at all locations; especially around
the lighthouse and park headquarters areas.
Advising the teacher or bus driver of safety concerns or
students' behavior.
Setting-up for the next day's program, including calling
schools to confirm arrival times, if necessary.
Communicating with other staff using radios and memos,
as needed.
Other responsibilities include:
o Carry out daily instructions.
o Completing a program development and evaluation sheet after
the groups depart.
o Reporting any problems or damaged and missing equipment immediately.
o Sending a follow-up "Thank-you" note to the teacher.
o Clean up of all equipment and disposal of trash and recyclables.
Leaving the storage areas "broom clean" daily.
o Completing follow-up evaluations to schools.
o Develop or modify educational materials to improve programming.
o Submission of a weekly timesheet.
o Properly dressing for each day's program and weather requirements.
o Properly presenting yourself in dress, actions and appearance
as a staff person for the college. This includes covering up or
removing excessive personal adornments and ornamentation.
o Assisting with public relations for the program including being
photographed for publicity and special events.
