Here I am birding Hawaii. And waiting for a surfing lesson are my new friends, Bev and Leo from Brooklyn, New York.

Many of Hawaii's native birds are extinct and replaced by introduced birds like the red-crested cardinal from Brazil. (Upper left). The native Apapane (Above, right) survives in the Ohia forests of the Big Island.

Stragglers like cattle egrets reach Hawaii when they are blown off course.

The golden plover breeds in the Arctic regions but winters in Hawaii. (Right)

Stilts are established on the islands and breed in Hawaii. (Below)

The gentle fairy tern breeds on most tropical islands in the Pacific. It is sacred to some Polynesians and taboo to disturb.
