Emergency Procedures
Ocean Institute O.E.M. - (Effective:
9/21/01)
In the event of a nationwide
emergency or threat, the National Park Service has advised us
of the following procedures regarding Sandy Hook.
- Sandy Hook Park will remain open if there
is an Orange or Red Alert Status. The Park will close only if
there is a specific threat presented regarding Sandy Hook. Please
remember your receipt for a Sandy Hook program to facilitate
your entrance to the Park (and to avoid paying the entrance fee).
If there are parents coming in cars with your trip, they should
be riding the bus. If they are traveling in private vehicles
(Not encouraged) they should anticipate paying the entrance fee
to park at the beaches.
- If a specific threat is imminent, all groups
and employees will be advised by the rangers to leave the Park.
Please advise your bus drivers and bus company beforehand that
they are required to stay with the groups and within contact
of the group throughout any visit to Sandy Hook.
- In the event of an emergency, we will leave
a broadcast message on the Ocean Institute's weather/emergency
phone line (732) 224-2901 ext. 7246. On this line we will advise
your school of the status of your group and what procedures they
are following. (Most likely they will be directed to return to
school.)
- In the unlikely event that it is needed,
the local emergency shelter is at Croydon Hall Park on Leonardville
Road in Middletown,
approximately 7 miles west of Sandy Hook, off of Route 36W.
- Additional information may be available from
the Sandy Hook Park Rangers' Station (732) 872-5900 or Visitor
Center (732) 872-5970 and www.ready.gov
- Important note: In the unlikely event that there is
an emergency while your group is at Sandy Hook, we will make
every attempt to have your teacher contact your school directly,
but your first step should be to check our emergency phone line
(732) 224-2901 ext. 7246 for an update.
