Our grandfather's "school" field trip to Sandy Hook in 1912.

West Point cadets would take an annual field trip to Sandy Hook to "man" the guns and other weapons. These are images from the yearbook of our grandfather (Colonel John Hinemon). Their boat ride down the Hudson river (Left), and at Battery Gunnison (Below).

then...and today. (Left)

(Above) Cadets in the Mortar Battery, which is empty today, but a favorite stop on our history tours.

At the right, a gun is "proofed" at the Proving Grounds (Loaded with a 10% excess of gun powder and test-fired). A dangerous but necessary test.

Targets at sea were fired upon by Sandy Hook's guns (Below).

Mines were laid at the mouth of the bay and activated during war-time. Cadets would also bivouac near the area that is G-Lot and the MAST program today at Sandy Hook.
