Mutineers, Moais and Midway:
The Natural and Human History of Some Notorious
and Far-Flung Pacific Islands.
This lecture will be the first of its kind for the International
Center in that it has a science focus to it, in addition to the
cultural aspect. Fulfilling a life-long dream to study seabirds,
the Director of BCC's Ocean Institute at Sandy Hook, Dave Grant,
was able to visit three of the most isolated and unique islands
of the Pacific: Pitcairn,
Easter and Midway
islands - and get his fill of natural and human history on the
way. Midway Atoll is known
for its huge colony of Laysan albatross, which is the largest
in the world. Also found here are the endangered Hawaiian Monk
seals, green sea turtles and spinner dolphins. Join us for this
intriguing lecture which will include some geology, wildlife,
interesting people and a sailing yarn or two. Refreshments will
be served.
