NMEA - 2002 Vancouver

Thanks to generous support from the Brookdale Community College Foundation, we were participants at the 2001 meeting of the National Marine Educators Association, which was held in Victoria, Canada. Ocean Institute presentations included Estuaries, More Than a Day at the Beach - Virtual Field Trips, and Plankton! Copies of these materials are available on request by writing to us at: Ocean Institute, Box 533, Sandy Hook, NJ 07732

Copies of the world famous Estuaries curriculum were distributed to scores of marine educators from around the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. Included at the Sea-swap were samples of legendary "storm beach" sand samples from Sandy Hook. These were traded for specimens collected by other marine educators from their favorite beaches, and are on display at the Ocean Institute at Sandy Hook.
The famous liberated laboratory rabbits at the University of Victoria which now live on campus.
The legendary "Mr. Fish" from Maine running the annual auction of priceless maritime memorabilia, including the famous NMEA Pike.

On a field trip to the Straits of Juan de Fuca, a local know-it-all shows off the boa kelp.
Vancouver Island is noted for its giant starfish and octopus.
Back at "Captain Ed's" office we examine a puzzling skull of the legendary sheep-pig of Vancouver Island. This is apparently the first cousin of the jackalope of southwestern US lore.
