Arctic and Vancouver Island Plankton

Our waters are the clearest offshore and in the winter when the sun is low, temperatures decrease and plankton growth is the slowest. However there is always a mixture of creatures drifting in the water; sometimes even fish eggs and larva.

Hauling a plankton net in the clearest waters in winter (Offshore waters with low Forel-Ule numbers like I-III ) will capture Phytoplankton and Zooplankton in great numbers.

Offshore waters with low Forel-Ule numbers like I-III will look clear and blue, but still harbor diatoms, copepods and even salps.
