Birds of Midway | Colony | Threats | Behaviors | Banding | Night at the Colony | Black-footed Albatross

Adults fly hundreds of miles north to capture squid and return to Midway Island. Marine debris the size of their prey item, especially disposable lighters and even toothbrushes, are picked up by the adults which mistake them for squid. Juveniles that are fed these items do not grow as fast and may starve to death. (Upper left) It is not unusual to find the remains of dead juveniles with a pile of accumulated plastic and other marine debris. (Upper right) Human activities on the island can also interfere with the birds since they return to historic sites that may have been developed. Today, albatross have the right of way on the island.
