The release of a dozen pet canaries in 90 years ago by a family working at the Commercial Pacific Cable Company, allowed this alien species to become established on Midway.
Although pretty, they are not a native species to the island and only thrive because of the presence of non-native plants that people have brought to the island.
	One of their main foods is the seeds of the peppergrass, another species that was introduced.
