The Bonin petrel arrives at the island at night and nests in sandy burrows that may be nine feet long. About 50,000 petrels arrive at Midway in August and begin digging their burrows. The females lay a single egg in January. Young seabirds that fail to learn how to fly, or are injured are often eaten by sharks. |
