Birds of Midway Island | Adult Fairy Terns | Fairy Chicks | Other Species | Tropicbirds

7,500 pairs of white terns nest at Midway, the largest colony in the Hawaiian islands.
The biggest threat to the chick is the hot, midday sun, so it must be shaded by the adult.

As the chick grows, the parents leave it for extended periods while they go fishing.

The chicks stand their ground and wait for the parents to return with food.

Balanced on its perch an older chick assumes a defensive posture.
