Sandy Hook's Spiders

Spiders are more common than you think and are quite valuable. Likely places to spot them are in thickets and fields with dense plant growth, and around some of the windows and air passages of the gun batteries where the draft brings in flying insects.

Look for them in the early morning when dew covers their webs and they are slow moving.

Although a few types can bite, most spiders are harmless and beneficial, and are one of the most helpful creatures to humans. Without them, insect pests would be difficult to control.

Many are beautiful ...or at least interesting to look at.

Not all spiders build webs.Wolf spiders and jumping spiders actively hunt for their prey.
