Cedar Crest College
Spring 2004 oceanographic boat trip

(Above) Our spring boat trip had a few surprises, including a large number of mud crabs and rock crabs that had become trapped in mussel beds. Apparently the mussels attached their byssal threads to the crabs as they rested in a dormant state during the cold weather.

They were carefully freed of their bonds and returned to the water.

(Below) There is always plenty of plankton in the water and the spring samples have a large quantity of golden-brown colored diatoms.

(Right) The secchi disc helps give us a way to standardize the turbidity of the water.

(Left) The Forel-Ule color scale standardizes the color of the water as it appears above the white portion of the secchi disc.

(Below) The water is discolored by different communities of plankton and by sediments carried to the coastal waters in runoff.

"Shooting the sun" with the sextant determines our latitude.

Catching the first horseshoe crabs of the year and winning this year's "FHCOTY" trophy improves the crew's attitude.
