South Carolina Sea Islands
Field Trips | Conference

We were treated to explore Dewees Island, a private community near Charleston. The water taxi is a great opportunity to watch birds like this loon (Gavia) and pull traps full of tasty stone crabs (Menippe), the big brother of Sandy Hook's mud crab..

(Below) We examine a horseshoe crab specimen worthy of the Guinness Book of Records.

(Right) Sea squirts growing on the docks lived up to their name!

(Below) Some of the creepy-crawling critters of the beach and swamp made this a great adventure.

A grateful mud turtle (Kinosternon) that was washed out to sea by a storm was rescued by a friend of the boat captain and hitched a free ride back through the sea oats to the swamps behind the dunes.
