We were treated to explore Dewees Island, a private community near Charleston. The water taxi is a great opportunity to watch birds like this loon (Gavia) and pull traps full of tasty stone crabs (Menippe), the big brother of Sandy Hook's mud crab.. A grateful mud turtle (Kinosternon) that was washed out to sea by a storm was rescued by a friend of the boat captain and hitched a free ride back through the sea oats to the swamps behind the dunes. ![]() Sea oats (Uniola) |
