What is Tech Prep?
The "Technology Preparation" program is a collaboration between Brookdale Community College and area high schools. College and high school faculty work together to integrate college level work into select high school courses. Students who complete these courses are given the opportunity to earn college credits at Brookdale Community College.
Do students pay for Tech Prep credits?
No, students do not pay tuition for these Brookdale credits. College credits earned through the Tech Prep program are awarded to students free of charge.
Which courses are involved in the Tech Prep program?
Some Monmouth County high schools offer Tech Prep courses in the following areas: Automotive Technology, CISCO, Culinary Arts, Visual Communication, Office Technology, Child Development, Fashion Merchandising, Computer-Aided Drafting and Design, and Information Technology.
How do students get involved in the Tech Prep program?
It's easy to get involved in Tech Prep! Just follow these four easy steps:
- Enroll in and pass the correct Tech Prep program or course sequence in high school
- Have the recommendation of a high school teacher or guidance counselor
- Submit a college application and a $25 application fee to Brookdale Community College
- Pass a challenge examination by testing, portfolio assessment or validation.
A grade of "C" or better must be earned.
How do Tech Prep students access their Brookdale credits?
In order to access credits earned through Tech Prep, students must successfully complete (with a grade of "C" or better) twelve additional credits at Brookdale Community College within two years of their high school graduation. Once these additional credits are completed, the Tech Prep credits will appear on the student's Brookdale transcript.
Even if students attend a college other than Brookdale, the credits earned through Tech Prep can still be accessed. Students must complete an additional twelve Brookdale credits within two years of their high school graduation. These credits can be taken at Brookdale during the summer and Winterim sessions. When these twelve credits are completed, the credits earned through the Tech Prep program will appear on the student's Brookdale transcript. Brookdale credits may be transferred to other colleges depending on the program of study and the college attended.
